Ruben Amorim plans to have a private conversation with Alejandro Garnacho after the Manchester United winger headed straight down the tunnel following his substitution in the first half.
Garnacho was lively during a tumultuous first half but was taken off after Patrick Dorgu received a straight red card, leaving United with 10 men. He was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui just before halftime, a decision that drew audible boos from sections of the home crowd. Frustrated, Garnacho walked directly to the dressing room.
Following the match, just before Amorim addressed the media, Garnacho shared a photo on his Instagram story showing him walking towards the tunnel, without any caption.
In response to comments about Garnacho’s attitude, Amorim said, “You are making a connection with [Marcus] Rashford, right? I know, I know. What I’m saying is I’m going to talk obviously with Garnacho about that [going down the tunnel]. So I will address that in the next press conference.”
Amorim was booed for the substitution but took the opportunity to explain his reasoning. He stated, “The thinking was we were playing more in the 5-3-1, and I know that is a risk. I felt the team was managing to control the game, and when making the substitution, you have to choose someone to come out. It was my choice.”
This isn’t the first time Garnacho has had issues with Amorim; he was previously dropped from the squad for showing dissent during a Europa League match against Viktoria Plzen. Reports suggested that he turned his back on Amorim while receiving instructions, leading to his omission from the squad for the Manchester derby that followed. Garnacho’s representatives claimed there was no disrespect intended, citing a misunderstanding.
