0 crosses, 0 dribbles, 1/6 duels won: Amorim Must Drop Struggling Man Utd Star After Another Woeful Display

Manchester United staged a remarkable second-half comeback against Everton, securing a draw at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The home side took the lead with two goals in the first half, putting United on the brink of yet another defeat as the Toffees displayed more energy and determination than the sluggish visitors. Everton dominated the second balls and appeared more aggressive in tackles, while the Red Devils looked disoriented. Manager Ruben Amorim spent much of the opening 45 minutes with his head in his hands.

Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt also had subpar performances, but Diogo Dalot was particularly frustrating on the right flank. Initially, Amorim believed Dalot’s best position was on the right, explaining his struggles on the left. However, similar issues have persisted even in his preferred role.

Dalot’s mistake led to Everton’s first goal. Instead of clearing a dangerous ball, he attempted to control it with his thigh. After his teammates failed to clear the danger, Beto capitalized to give the Toffees the lead. Dalot’s decision-making in attack was equally poor; he consistently opted for backward or sideways passes, resulting in a passing accuracy of 91 percent.

Despite playing as a wingback, Dalot did not attempt a single cross, while Patrick Dorgu on the opposite flank made four attempts. Dorgu was willing to take on defenders and drive into the box, whereas Dalot preferred to pass the ball. He had no shots and completed no dribbles throughout the match.

Amorim needs reinforcements on the right flank. In his system, a wingback is expected to stay wide and exploit space, but at 25, Dalot has proven to be an average full-back, lacking both defensive prowess and attacking threat. He won just one of six duels, committed two fouls, and lost possession ten times, earning the lowest rating among the defenders with a score of 6.5 on Sofascore.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Amorim is likely eager for new signings. Just as Dorgu has enhanced the left side, he surely hopes for a player like Geovany Quenda to revitalize the right flank. At least Amorim can take solace in not suffering another league defeat, thanks in large part to skipper Bruno Fernandes.
