‘Better for him’: Cole Palmer Breaks Silence on Chelsea’s Pursuit of Kobbie Mainoo Amid Financial Struggles

Cole Palmer seems to back Chelsea’s pursuit of Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

The young midfielder’s future at United is in doubt, with reports indicating that the club may be willing to sell him, despite previously viewing him as “untouchable.” The 19-year-old has not yet finalized a new contract, resulting in a deadlock in negotiations.

Mainoo’s current contract extends until June 2027, with an option for an additional year. Initially, a new deal was expected to reflect his status as a first-team player. However, speculation now surrounds a possible transfer either this month or in the summer. Concerns about the club’s direction and its chances of returning to the Champions League—especially with United currently sitting 13th in the Premier League—could affect his decision.

Chelsea has emerged as a leading contender to sign Mainoo, and Palmer seems keen to have his England teammate at Stamford Bridge. The Chelsea star liked an Instagram post indicating that the Blues are at the forefront of the race for Mainoo’s signature. The post from TheSecretScout1 asked fans, “News today of Chelsea leading the chase for Kobbie Mainoo if he leaves Man Utd. What do we think? Would this be a good move for him?”

Palmer and Mainoo share a strong connection. After Palmer scored in the Euro 2024 final against Spain, he imitated Mainoo’s celebration, which the midfielder recounted in an interview with GQ: “I ran to the byline and told Cole to do my celebration as well – which he did. I was thrilled.”

In the same interview, Palmer praised Mainoo, stating, “He knows I think he was the best player at the Euros. And obviously, what he’s doing for one of the biggest clubs in the world…” Mainoo reciprocated the admiration, saying, “It’s been incredible in his first full season for the club – to be up there in goals, assists, and overall contributions. It’s massive.”

Reports indicate that Mainoo isn’t the only Manchester United player facing an uncertain future. On-field struggles and financial challenges have led the club to consider serious offers for its squad. Once seen as essential, players like Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund may also be up for sale. Homegrown players like Mainoo and Garnacho hold particular significance under profit and sustainability regulations.
