Nikola Jokic, a three-time NBA MVP, is known as one of the league’s most modest players. Unlike many who seek the spotlight, the Denver Nuggets star values simplicity and often spends his leisure time in Serbia, indulging in his passion for horse racing. His father, Branislav Jokic, has frequently remarked that Nikola has always cherished “the simple things” in life, staying true to his roots and eschewing the glamorous lifestyle often associated with NBA success.
Recently, Jokic led Serbia to a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, defeating Germany’s reigning world champions 93-83. This marked his second Olympic medal, following a silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Remarkably, just a day after this achievement, Jokic returned to his hometown of Sombor to compete in a horse race, where his horse, Brenno Laumar, triumphed. This choice reflects Jokic’s commitment to returning home and pursuing his love for horseback riding whenever possible.
In a recent interview with Sportal, Branislav Jokic discussed his son’s humble lifestyle and future aspirations. “Nikola enjoys the simple things in life,” he stated. “We plan to develop family houses and a racecourse for him to pursue his passion for horses. What else could he need?” Branislav emphasized Nikola’s preference for a quieter life away from the hustle of big cities, finding happiness and fulfillment in his home and close circle.
Nikola’s life focuses not on luxury or public prominence. Branislav noted that while they have always had comforts like a summer house and horses, Nikola never felt the need for more. “He might go rafting in Belgrade, but what’s the point? He isn’t interested in becoming a public figure. He has his music and a favorite pub where he spends time with childhood friends,” he explained, highlighting Nikola’s tight-knit circle and reluctance to integrate new people into his life.
Despite his reclusive nature, Jokic celebrates his accomplishments with his supporters. Upon returning to Serbia after his Olympic success, he was welcomed as a hero, with fans calling him “MVP.” Grateful, Jokic joined in the festivities, showing that while he values tranquility and simplicity, he is not immune to the love and devotion of his people.
During the Olympic campaign, Jokic showcased why he is among the top figures in international basketball, leading his team in all categories with averages of 18.8 points, 10.7 rebounds, 8.7 assists, 2.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game. His exceptional performance earned him a spot on the tournament’s All-Star team, reinforcing his country’s pride in having one of the world’s finest players represent them on the court.
