At Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School in New Addington, children’s TV star Ben Shires greeted the pupils and shared in the excitement of reuniting with one of his former students, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the right-back for Crystal Palace. Wan-Bissaka was thrilled to return and inspire the current students.
As he departed, the audience erupted in applause, and he participated in a Q&A session organized by Shires to test the kids’ football knowledge. Three lucky pupils were invited to the stage.
In a touching gesture, Wan-Bissaka gifted the school a signed jersey from a game, serving as a special keepsake for the students.
“It felt good to be back,” Wan-Bissaka remarked. “I have many fond memories here, and it’s great to return.”
Reflecting on the warm welcome, he added, “I’ve never experienced anything like this before; it felt fantastic! It’s amazing to see how the kids have changed since I was here ten years ago.”
Having attended the school a decade earlier, Wan-Bissaka was remembered fondly by faculty members. Elaine Snow, who was his teaching assistant in sixth grade, recalled, “I remember him well. Despite the chaos of our class, he was a wonderful student and a huge football fan!”
The children will cherish the memorable day, and Wan-Bissaka felt a sense of pride returning to his roots in New Addington. The signed jersey will be framed and treasured.
“It was wonderful to see him again after all these years,” shared cleaner Colm Conneely, who had a soft spot for the young footballer. “He even remembered my name, which was the best part! He was always a good kid during his time here.”
