After waiting until “garbage time” to introduce teenage sensation Chido Obi-Martin, Manchester United fans labeled Ruben Amorim a “COWARD.”
The 17-year-old was one of EIGHT young players substituted in United’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.
With Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo among the injured senior players, Ruben Amorim had to rely on United’s youth to fill the gaps in the lineup.
As his team sought to recover from James Maddison’s opening goal in the 13th minute, the Red Devils manager was reluctant to make any substitutions.
By the time injury time rolled around, Spurs had utilized all five of their substitutes.
In contrast, United made no changes to their exhausted squad.
Nonetheless, Amorim took a gamble by substituting Obi-Martin for Casemiro in the 91st minute.
Since joining from Arsenal last summer, the teenage striker has been a prolific scorer for United’s U18 team and has even set youth league records.
However, Obi-Martin couldn’t make an impact during his senior debut, with only a few minutes remaining in the match against Spurs.
Moreover, many fans took to social media to criticize Amorim for his delayed decision to make the change.
“You put Chido on in the ninetieth minute?” one user questioned. “You are a coward, Ruben!”
“Chido Obi getting garbage time minutes,” remarked another fan.
“Should have happened thirty minutes ago,” one user commented.
“Unacceptable from Ruben; this sends the completely wrong message,” another exclaimed.
“What was the point of bringing him on for just three minutes?” one fan declared.
“I can’t forgive Amorim for not making a single substitution until the 90th minute,” another commented.
