Before Alexander Volkanovski’s title defense against Yair Rodriguez at UFC 290 on Saturday night, Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray surprised fans by leaving the arena with the UFC featherweight champion.
Given their long-standing friendship, the two athletes decided to support each other ahead of the fight. Murray, a Canadian native, wore a jersey featuring Volkanovski’s name and number, while Volkanovski donned a jersey with Murray’s name and number.
Many spectators were intrigued by the unexpected walkout, noting the mutual admiration and respect between the two sportsmen. One fan remarked, “What a random combo.” Volkanovski ultimately won the match by unanimous decision, crediting Murray for keeping him motivated and focused.
In a unique twist, Jamal Murray and Alex Volkanovski swapped roles for a day. As the reigning UFC featherweight champion, Volkanovski trained with the Nuggets, while Murray taught him mixed martial arts.
Murray, a natural in MMA, quickly adapted and delivered powerful strikes that knocked Volkanovski down several times. However, Volkanovski found it challenging to maintain the intensity of an NBA game, struggling to make baskets due to constant misdirection.
“It was a real eye-opening experience,” Murray said. “I have immense respect for what Volkanovski does. MMA is a brutal sport, and he’s one of the best in the world.”
In the end, both athletes gained valuable insights from their training. Murray realized that MMA was far more demanding than he had expected, while Volkanovski discovered that basketball was much more challenging than it seemed.
“I’m glad I did it,” Volkanovski said. “It was a lot of fun, and I learned a great deal about basketball. I’m not sure I’m cut out for the NBA, but it was an amazing experience.”
The two sportsmen concluded their day with big smiles and a delicious meal, both agreeing it was a memorable event they wouldn’t forget.
