Marcus Rashford’s Rollercoaster Journey: From Man Utd Hero to Aston Villa ‘Fresh Start’ Amid Controversies and Setbacks

A new chapter begins for Marcus Rashford, and with it, the hope for a fresh start.

Just weeks after expressing his desire to leave Manchester United, the 27-year-old star has officially departed Old Trafford, marking the end of a tumultuous period in his career.

In a social media announcement, Rashford stated that joining Aston Villa on a short-term loan until the end of the season was an “easy decision,” with a £40 million buy option for the summer included.

Few players in history can claim 60 senior England caps and nearly 150 goals for Manchester United, placing Rashford among footballing icons like Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney.

From a financial perspective, Villa has acquired an elite forward with significant top-level experience at a price that appears quite reasonable in today’s market.

For Rashford, this move means joining an ascending club that offers Champions League football and the opportunity to work under Unai Emery—a top coach known for managing world-class talents like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

Although the move seems beneficial for both sides, there’s a palpable sense of regret surrounding Rashford’s departure.

Manchester United legend Gary Neville expressed his feelings on Sunday, saying it left him with a “tinge of sadness.” Many United fans share this sentiment, having witnessed Rashford’s significant contributions at Old Trafford over the past nine years, only to see him sign with a Premier League rival.

“Thinking back to Marcus Rashford as an eight or nine-year-old in the United academy, receiving a substantial contract a couple of years ago and scoring 30 goals, it’s alarming to see the decline in recent years,” he reflected on The Gary Neville Podcast. “It’s essential for him to leave Manchester United and Old Trafford, and it saddens me to say that, especially considering how things have changed in just a few months.”

So, what led to the decline of Manchester United’s star forward? The issues seem to run deeper than simply falling out with new manager Ruben Amorim, who has sidelined Rashford since his shocking admission in January.

Just two seasons ago, under Erik ten Hag, Rashford was United’s leading goal scorer, netting 29 goals across all competitions, including 17 in the Premier League, helping the team secure a third-place finish behind Manchester City and Arsenal—a position that would delight fans today.

This impressive tally was not an isolated incident; Rashford had previously demonstrated his scoring prowess in the Premier League, tallying 17 goals in the 2019-20 season.

While Rashford made a significant impact on the pitch, his influence off it may be even more remarkable. He endeared himself to fans during his successful tenure by launching a heartfelt campaign against former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, advocating for the government to reverse its decision on school meal vouchers.

Rashford, who faced a challenging upbringing as one of five children raised by a single mother, ensured that 1.3 million children received school meals during the summer holidays in 2020.

His efforts earned him an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in 2021.

On the field, his performances and ambassadorial role led Manchester United to offer him a reported weekly wage of £325,000 in the summer of 2023, just months after he achieved a season-best goal tally.

However, since becoming one of the club’s highest earners, Rashford’s scoring has diminished, and his performances have declined, causing him to drop down the pecking order under both Ten Hag and Amorim.

As he prepares for his debut with Aston Villa, Rashford has netted only 11 Premier League goals across two seasons since signing that lucrative deal—six fewer than in his career-best campaign.

Yet, his struggles at Old Trafford can’t solely be attributed to his declining form. Last season, he was unexpectedly dropped by Ten Hag due to an “internal disciplinary issue,” later revealed to be a matter of poor timekeeping. Rashford missed the matchday squad against Wolves after oversleeping and arriving late to a team meeting.
