UP OR BACK: Manchester United Flop Antony Poised for Exit as Agent Hints at Possible Move Away from Old Trafford

Manchester United’s underperforming winger, Antony, is reportedly attracting interest from Olympiacos after his agent revealed that the player is open to a loan move this month.

Signed for a hefty £86 million in September 2022, Antony’s transfer has been criticized as one of the worst value-for-money deals in Premier League history. The Brazilian has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, scoring only once this season in a Carabao Cup match against Barnsley, and he hasn’t found the net in the Premier League since April 2023.

Antony’s difficulties have worsened under new manager Ruben Amorim, as the 23-year-old has yet to start a Premier League match since the Portuguese coach took over. In nine games, he has spent five either on the bench or not included in the squad.

Given Antony’s poor form, the two years left on his contract, and the significant transfer fee, a permanent move seems unlikely. A loan to Olympiacos could provide him with a chance to rejuvenate his career while addressing United’s concerns about his reduced role.

According to the Daily Mail, Olympiacos is preparing a loan offer for the 24-year-old, and Amorim is willing to let him go, prompting interest from several clubs across Europe.

Olympiacos would welcome Antony’s arrival as they aim to maintain their title challenge. They currently lead the Greek Super League, but fierce rivals Panathinaikos are just two points behind.

Antony would likely seize the opportunity to escape his struggles at Old Trafford, even if it’s just a temporary move. His agent, Junior Pedroso, recently made an appeal for clubs to consider his client.

“Many clubs have approached us regarding Antony’s move in January,” Pedroso told GiveMeSport. “These clubs wanted to understand the situation, so I can confirm there is concrete interest.

“Antony’s future is closely linked to Manchester United’s decisions. If the club believes a loan would help him gain more minutes and regain his confidence, we will explore that option together.

“Otherwise, Antony is working hard to reclaim his place and showcase his skills under the new coach, Ruben Amorim.”

Amorim has indicated that he is open to giving Antony a larger role at United, stating, “He needs more confidence. If you remember the Antony from Ajax, he just lacks a bit of confidence to take players on one-on-one, but he will improve.

“He is working very hard and is trying to play more centrally rather than wide, especially in this game. He just needs to continue working hard, and I will help him become a better player.”
