Manchester United emerged victorious against Southampton, but Alejandro Garnacho’s early miss in the first half raised concerns for the Red Devils at Old Trafford.
Rasmus Hojlund expressed his frustration towards Garnacho after the Argentina international squandered a chance. With 20 minutes gone, Hojlund made a strong run into the box and pulled the ball back for Garnacho, who failed to find the target while the score was still level.
After striking the woodwork in his own frustration, Hojlund showed visible irritation at Garnacho, as United struggled to find their rhythm. The club has turned down a bid from Napoli for Garnacho, who is reportedly available for the right price.
Meanwhile, Hojlund was substituted for Joshua Zirkzee after 53 minutes, having been unable to add to his two Premier League goals this season. Amad Diallo stepped up dramatically, scoring a late hat-trick in just 12 minutes to secure the win for United.
In the opening half, Southampton outplayed Ruben Amorim’s side, with Manuel Ugarte’s own goal giving the Saints a 1-0 lead at the break. As the match seemed to be heading for another home defeat for United, Amad scored in the 82nd minute, igniting a comeback.
He followed up with goals in the 90th and 94th minutes, sealing the three points and celebrating alongside Garnacho. Despite this being United’s first home win since December 1st, Amorim voiced his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance.
“This team is not used to that. It can come off as a lack of enthusiasm. Ugarte is late, Kobbie Mainoo is late, and Bruno goes outside when the ball is inside. One transition, and Leny Yoro can’t catch the guy. These small things push the team back and create nervousness without the ball,” he explained.
“When you get one click, one goal, one opportunity, the team feels it can take control. I want to be fair; today was not about a lack of enthusiasm, but rather a lack of speed and sometimes a lack of control.”
