Goalkeeper Altay Bayindir praised Manchester United’s supporters for their significant contribution to the team’s FA Cup third round victory over Arsenal on Sunday.
United advanced to the next round with a 5-3 win in the penalty shootout, a moment made possible by Bayindir’s crucial save against Kai Havertz during the shootout. The Turkey international also played a vital role in the match, stopping a penalty from Martin Ødegaard during regulation time. The Norwegian missed the opportunity to put Arsenal ahead 2-1 after Gabriel had equalized following Bruno Fernandes’ opening goal.
At the time of Bayindir’s save, United were down to 10 men after Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Mikel Merino in the 61st minute. Despite the odds, United persevered to take the match to penalties, where they converted all their attempts.
For Bayindir, making only his fourth appearance of the season, the nearly 8,000 traveling supporters provided essential motivation for him and his teammates.
“We can’t just focus on this game because they show this level of support every match,” Bayindir told MUTV. “Whether we’re winning or losing, they feel everything deeply. They want to see good things on the pitch, and they support us wholeheartedly.
“We owe it to our fans to deliver. They are incredible—always there, always giving their all. For instance, I was close to the fans by the goal, and they were chanting ‘glory’ and ‘come on United.’ I thought to myself, ‘Come on, guys, we need to do more.’ They will keep supporting us, and we will give our best.”
