Ruben Amorim commended his Manchester United team for securing their spot in the FA Cup fourth round at the expense of Arsenal, emphasizing their cohesion and resilience under pressure.
United encountered adversity, playing with ten men from the 61st minute after Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card for a tackle on Mikel Merino.
Despite this setback, the team remained resilient, pushing the match into extra time and ultimately winning in a penalty shootout. This victory comes on the heels of their 2-0 loss to Arsenal on December 4, marking Amorim’s first defeat as United manager.
Amorim stated, “We showed a different mentality compared to our last match against Arsenal, even while playing with ten men. We struggled early on to maintain possession and found ourselves chasing the ball. Although Arsenal didn’t create many clear chances, they controlled the game with their fresh legs, making it a challenging contest for us.
“Nevertheless, our unity and determination to face the difficulties paid off. We earned this victory because we endured together and displayed remarkable character.
“The players were exhausted, but from the outset, I sensed it was our day. There was a strong bond among our fans, staff, and the team. It was a truly special day for us.”
Ruben Amorim praised his Manchester United players for showcasing a “different spirit” in their match against Arsenal.
The Red Devils triumphed over Arsenal in a penalty shootout to advance to the fourth round of the FA Cup, just weeks after suffering a loss at the Emirates in the league.
Amorim celebrated deputy goalkeeper Altay Bayindir as a “hero” following his standout performance.
“I think it’s clear we’re becoming more resilient. When we score first, it helps us endure; it feels like we gain more strength.”
Regarding the impressive display from Bayindir, who made several crucial saves, he remarked, “He’s a great guy who works hard, and life has its beautiful moments. Just a few weeks ago, we were going through a tough time, but now he’s a hero for us.”
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta was left to lament the exit from a competition he won in 2020, which remains his only major trophy with Arsenal.
He stated, “It’s unbelievable that we lost. When you evaluate our performance in relation to the situation, you know we deserved to win by a wide margin.
“I love my players, I love our team, and I appreciate their talent and contributions. In a thousand games, you might lose one, and perhaps this was that one.
“The ball needs to go in the net, and then you have to dominate the opponent; that’s the reality.”
Adding to the disappointment was the injury to Gabriel Jesus, who was stretchered off in the first half.
“I have no update, but it doesn’t look good,” he said. “He was in significant pain, had to leave on a stretcher, and things aren’t looking positive.”
