Vinicius Jr. reignited his ongoing rivalry with Mallorca’s Pablo Maffeo during a heated Super Cup match at the Bernabeu on Thursday night.
The Real Madrid star and the defender have a history that dates back to their first confrontation in the 2021-22 season when Los Blancos faced their LaLiga rivals. Although they seemed to have reconciled after a heavy challenge from Maffeo, tensions flared again during the cup tie, which ended with Carlo Ancelotti’s team winning 3-0.
Just 10 minutes into the match, the atmosphere grew tense when Maffeo’s aggressive man-marking aimed to disrupt Vinicius’s rhythm. In response, Vinicius waved his hand at Maffeo’s chest, leading the defender to go down in an attempt to draw a foul.
On the pitch, Jude Bellingham urged the referee to penalize Maffeo for what he perceived as a dive, while Real Madrid’s substitutes reacted angrily, trying to draw the attention of referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea to the incident involving the Mallorca player.
