‘It’s not his fault’: Arne Slot holds talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold after Man Utd defeat and points finger at Red Devils star

Arne Slot confirmed having a conversation with Trent Alexander-Arnold following his subpar performance in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United, but clarified it was a routine discussion he conducts with all his players.

The Liverpool manager refrained from providing specific details about the exchange but emphasized he also reviewed areas of improvement with other players, such as Alexis Mac Allister, based on their performance in the match.

“I spoke to other players individually as well, which is something you do regularly,” Slot explained. “The things I discuss with them remain private.”

He elaborated on the feedback process, stating: “After every game, we review what went well, often stemming from work rate, and what can be improved. For example, with Macca, a little more effort in sprinting might have prevented Diallo’s cutback shot.”

Slot did reveal Alexander-Arnold was disappointed but just like the rest of the team after they dropped points against their bitter rivals.

The Reds boss did say immediately after the game he did not believe the soon-to-be out of contract star was distracted by Real Madrid interest. He said: “I think we were all disappointed, not only Trent, we were all disappointed by the way we played, first of all by the result, parts of the game we could be quite satisfied with, other parts we were not completely happy with.

“That was not only Trent, there were more things in the game we could have done better. Trent did not play his best game, I’ve said that already, but it is not the first time in his life he didn’t play the best game of his career.

“He has played so so so many games well for this club, now it wasn’t his best – like some others it wasn’t the best game – but we just pick it up and start training again today. These players know if you play 50-60 games in a season once in a while you don’t have your best performance.

“Maybe we should highlight more how good it is these players every three days can play such a good game. Apart from the game not being the best it was again an eventful game from Liverpool.

“All the games we have played in the last six months, maybe even longer when Jurgen was here, I got many text messages from people saying ‘What a game again, unbelievable the last 10 minutes, both teams playing fully for a win’ and that is part of our job to make it an eventful game.

“That is what we are trying to do every game, mostly with the result of winning. It was not enough to win it but definitely an interesting game to watch.”

Liverpool face Tottenham on Wednesday night in a Carabao Cup semi-final and all eyes will be on whether Alexander-Arnold keeps his place in the team with Conor Bradley back fit.

But Slot was giving nothing away and said: “I think it will benefit every player that we had a disappointing result, we would have loved to win that game, so every player wants to play two days later again – but every player who was not on the pitch would love to okay tomorrow as well. That’s the good thing, they all want to play.”
