Luka Modric, at 39 years and 47 days, made history last week by becoming the oldest player to participate in an official match for Real Madrid.

While many goalkeepers have retired and most outfield players have hung up their boots by this age, the perpetually youthful Croatian continues to thrive.

What’s the secret to his remarkable longevity? Relevo spoke with Modric’s personal physiotherapist, Vlatko Vucetic, for insights.

It’s important to note that Luka’s regimen doesn’t involve any mythical potions or miracle solutions.

Vucetic, who has worked with Modric since 2012 and known him since 2010, recalled the beginning of their collaboration, which started with a simple conversation.

“Luka approached me and asked if I could help him,” Vucetic said.

“Our three main goals are maintaining his fitness, preventing injuries, and extending his career. He initially aimed to play until 36, but clearly, he has surpassed that milestone.”

Together, they established a rigorous training routine that Modric adheres to almost daily, participating in around 350 sessions annually, either at the club’s facilities or at home. Each session begins with a demanding 45-minute warm-up.

His daily routine includes resistance band exercises, arm and shoulder strength training, numerous rotational movements, and a targeted lower body program.

Vucetic emphasizes the importance of preserving muscle mass, which can diminish rapidly after age thirty.

“It requires extra effort to regain what you lost a year ago,” he explained. “You must be dedicated, and honestly, I believe the preventive measures—especially the resistance band work—are crucial.”

Nonetheless, none of this would be feasible without Modric’s unwavering commitment. The midfield maestro rarely takes a break, fully convinced of the benefits of his training regimen.

Vucetic emphasizes that Luka’s age is merely a number, as he possesses a significantly lower metabolic age, which reflects his biological and physical condition.

“He has a metabolic age of under 30 due to his years of focus on prevention,” Vucetic explains. “In contrast, my metabolic age is 35, even though I’m chronologically 50.” Despite being 39, Luka’s metabolic age is still below 30.

Vučetic lists a number of important elements that contributed to Modrić’s achievement, but he is hesitant to name just one: family, psychology, motor skills, hydration, and hygiene. And self-control, of course.
