ON FIRE: Mason Greenwood hits a career milestone with a crucial goal in Marseille’s 2-0 victory over French rivals, showcasing his red-hot form since departing Old Trafford! 🔥

Mason Greenwood’s goal in Marseille’s 2-0 victory over St Etienne earned his team three crucial points to maintain pressure on Paris Saint-Germain while marking a personal achievement for the forward.

The ex-Manchester United striker joined Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille squad during the summer transfer window after spending the previous season on loan in LaLiga with Getafe.

Marseille signed Greenwood from the Red Devils for £30million, a decision that initially divided fans, with some launching a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign when his name was linked to the club.

The England forward hadn’t featured for Man United since January 2022 and was loaned to Getafe last season, where he scored 10 goals and provided six assists, earning the club’s Player of the Season title.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 and charged in October with attempted rape, assault, and controlling behavior. However, all charges were dropped in February 2023 after witnesses withdrew. Greenwood denies any wrongdoing.

After beginning to rebuild his career at Getafe, Greenwood has carried his strong form into Marseille, scoring his 10th Ligue 1 goal on Sunday.

This marked the first time he had reached double figures in a league campaign since scoring 10 goals in 31 matches for Man United during the 2019-20 season.

The tally also moved him into joint-second in the Ligue 1 scoring charts, tied with PSG’s Bradley Barcola at 10 goals in 14 appearances, trailing only Lille’s rising star, who has netted 11.

Notably, Greenwood became the first player since Sonny Anderson in 1994 to score his first 10 Ligue 1 goals in just 14 matches, matching the former Brazilian international’s impressive feat.

Greenwood’s former club, Manchester United, have struggled to find consistent goalscoring form this season, though the arrival of Ruben Amorim has provided a slight uptick.

Alejandro Garnacho leads United’s scoring charts this season with eight across all competitions, while Marcus Rashford’s four is their highest tally in the Premier League.

Against historic rivals St Etienne, Greenwood and fellow summer signing Adrien Rabiot both found the net to secure three points, keeping Marseille in close pursuit of PSG in the title race.

Earlier this month, Greenwood scored a dramatic stoppage-time penalty to seal a 2-1 win over Monaco.

De Zerbi’s Marseille side currently sit level with Monaco on 29 points, trailing modern-day giants PSG by five.
