Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has sparked speculation about his future at the club after giving a cryptic response to a question about a potential move to Real Madrid.
Following Liverpool’s 2-0 Champions League victory against Real Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, a Spanish journalist questioned Van Dijk directly if he intends to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid in the summer.
The Dutchman, who is out of contract at the end of the season, chuckled at the question’s directness before noting that he is “fully focused” on Liverpool’s upcoming game against Manchester City.
However, when the journalist pointed out that Real Madrid need defenders, with David Alaba and Eder Militao currently injured, Van Dijk’s response sparked speculation about his future.
“[Antonio] Rudiger is there?” Van Dijk replied, before adding “Wow, I don’t know” when asked if he could join Real Madrid in the summer.
Van Dijk’s response has worried some Liverpool fans, with one supporter posting on social media: “Can Liverpool hurry up and tie down Van Dijk. Absolutely insane he can talk to the likes of Real Madrid in just 5 weeks.”
However, a fresh report claims that Van Dijk is set to remain at Anfield, with his agent telling interested parties that he is “no longer attainable.”
Van Dijk is one of three key Liverpool players, along with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
