MIKEL ARTETA was furious with the referees after Arsenal lost at the San Siro because of TWO penalties.
The manager of Arsenal was furious about Hakan Calhanoglu’s penalty kick in the first half for a questionable touch against Mikel Merino. Inter Milan won the Champions League big win thanks to that kick.
Arteta then said that his team “one thousand percent” earned a penalty after Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer hit Merino in the head.
Artisteta said, “They were very mean to us.” The punishment for Inter is something I don’t get. Deflection is what it is. Since it is so close to his body, there is no danger and no response.
“He can’t do anything.” It’s not possible for you to escape.
At the beginning of the season, we were told that there wouldn’t be a penalty, but it turned out to be one anyway.
“But if that is a penalty, then Merino getting punched in the head is a penalty 100% of the time.” It is really hard to accept that.”
Martin Keown, an Arsenal icon and football commentator for TNT, said, “It was a controversial moment.” Very fine edges. I don’t think it was a punishment, and I think it was very harsh.
“Where should you put your arm when it’s that way?” Who came up with these rules? Have they played?
“Mikel Merino is so close, and the arm has come up to challenge.” It’s very harsh.
Merino is getting ready to do his first move when the ball deflects.
Keown also said this about Sommer’s link to Merino: “You can see there is a follow-through.” On a different night, the judge might have thought that was violent.
“He [referee Istvan Kovacs] was leveling the playing field and giving out penalties, but he wasn’t leveling the playing field on penalties.”
It was confirmed by Arteta that Merino was taken off at halftime because of the impact with Sommer. He also said that Merino did not feel well before the game started and was “groggy.”
As of now, Arsenal has lost three of their last six games across all tournaments. This is happening in both the Premier League and Europe, where they are having a bad run.
They now have to go to Stamford Bridge on Sunday to play Chelsea, who is in good form. Kai Havertz is also questionable because he needed stitches after a late-game head-to-head against Inter.
But the away team had chances. They took 20 shots, which was the most they had in a Champions League game without scoring since November 2006, when they played CSKA Moscow.
Arteta also said, “I’m proud of my team.” We can beat Chelsea if we play like we did tonight.
“Because we made so many chances, we should have scored.”
“But that was more us tonight. I’m proud of them; we beat one of the best teams in Europe at their stadium.”
“The worst thing about the night was the loss, the performance, the attitude, and how well they played against one of the best teams in Europe. I haven’t seen that in any of the games I’ve seen.”
“We could have handled many situations much better and scored at least two goals. We are very upset because we didn’t do what we needed to do in both boxes.”
