Mikel Arteta has confirmed that midfielder Declan Rice will be assessed for fitness this weekend. The news comes after the 25-year-old England international was ruled out of the Gunners’ Champions League group stage clash with Inter Milan.
The £105m star played the full 90 minutes against Newcastle on Saturday , before missing training on Tuesday morning.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the trip to Italy, coach Arteta said: “Unfortunately, Declan suffered an injury in the match against Newcastle. He played the whole game but has not felt well in the last few days.”
“We will have to assess him on Thursday and see if he is ready for the Chelsea game,” the Spaniard added.
Coach Arteta announced bad news about Declan Rice
This can be seen as bad news, a heavy blow to Arsenal’s ambitions because the team’s medical department has been working at full capacity since the beginning of the season. Captain Martin Odegaard is still sidelined, while Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu will continue to be absent due to knee injuries. In addition, Kieran Tierney is also still sidelined, not returning to normal training.
Arsenal are now below Chelsea in the Premier League table after Enzo Maresca’s side earned a point in a 1-1 draw with Man United on Sunday.
However, before thinking about the London derby this weekend, early tomorrow morning (November 7), Coach Arteta’s team will face another extremely difficult challenge, when they have to visit Giuseppe Meazza Stadium of an Inter Milan team that has been in very good form recently.
