Real Madrid will undoubtedly need to add a top-tier right back during the summer 2025 transfer window, but many supporters would prefer that the team move quickly to make a signing this winter.
Florentino Perez has been aware for years that he lacked depth behind Dani Carvajal, but he has suddenly felt compelled to address the right back position for a straightforward reason that appeals to him: market potential.
Real Madrid has the chance to sign a high-profile player on a free transfer for the second time in a row. Perez is attempting to get Liverpool star right back Trent Alexander-Arnold for free next season after eventually signing his top dream target, Kylian Mbappe, from PSG last summer.
A few weeks earlier, world-class right back Dani Carvajal tore his ACL, which was a further reason for the increased urgency. If that wasn’t enough to convince Florentino, he must have been even more troubled by Lucas Vazquez’s terrible performance in a 4-0 loss to Barcelona.
Alexander-Arnold is clearly at the top of Real Madrid’s right back want list, as Perez has been clearly fixated on getting the generational playmaker for nothing.
Los Blancos must find other options as Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool continue their negotiations, with little assurance that he will join good friend Jude Bellingham at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Diario AS reports that Real Madrid is also interested in Pedro Porro, a star for Tottenham, and Jeremie Frimpong, a right wing back for Bayer Leverkusen.
Along with Xabi Alonso, Frimpong and Florian Wirtz are Leverkusen players who have been strongly linked to a move to Real Madrid. Although Frimpong is more of an attacking wing back, Carvajal might find him to be an intriguing partner against more defensive teams; after all, Real Madrid had previously considered a player similar to Frimpong in Achraf Hakimi.
Instead of allowing him to go for Tottenham in 2021–2022, Real Madrid could have and should have signed Porro, a much more well-rounded player and a sure-fire right back prospect at Sporting CP.
Real Madrid couldn’t go wrong with Porro as an Alexander-Arnold substitute because he has been one of the top right backs in the world since joining Spurs. However, that is presuming Spurs would even consider selling the Portuguese international for anything less than a king’s ransom.
