Hours after being fired by Manchester United, Erik ten Hag was seen making his way back to the Netherlands on a private jet.
After being called to a morning meeting at Carrington and told that his tenure as manager was coming to an end, United executives fired the Dutchman on Monday morning.
Following Sunday’s loss to West Ham, which dropped United to 14th place in the Premier League, the Dutchman was fired after two and a half years in command.
And after being seen being picked up by a chaffeur and driven to Manchester airport before boarding a trip to Amsterdam, the 54-year-old quickly left Manchester.
According to FlightRadar, the flight was originally scheduled to depart at 2 p.m., but Ten Hag encountered yet another challenge when his departure time was postponed until 4:14 p.m.
According to Mail Sport, CEO Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth informed Ten Hag of his dismissal Monday morning at a meeting that was characterized as dignified and respectful.
After two and a half years in charge, United officials opted to fire the Dutchman after Sunday’s 2-1 loss to West Ham dropped them to 14th place in the Premier League.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag’s new number two, will fill in temporarily as the team searches for a long-term replacement.
It is thought that former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic, Sporting Lisbon coach Ruben Amorim, Brentford manager Thomas Frank, and former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez were consulted.
Until Monday morning, when he was summoned to meet with sporting director Dan Ashworth and CEO Omar Berrada, Ten Hag was unaware of his future. ‘Respectful and dignified’ is how sources describe the meeting.
Ten Hag’s car was seen at his house today, and he is still in Manchester. Prior to Man United’s Carabao Cup match against Leicester City on Wednesday, he recorded a last press conference following Sunday’s match against West Ham; however, it will no longer be aired. It is anticipated that Van Nistelrooy will not speak until after the Leicester match.
“Erik ten Hag has resigned from his position as Manchester United men’s first-team manager,” the club said in a statement released at 11.50 a.m. on Monday.
After being hired in April 2022, Erik guided the team to two domestic championships: the FA Cup in 2024 and the Carabao Cup in 2023.
