When Kai Havertz wasn’t allowed to take a penalty, Arsenal fans got very angry, even before Leandro Trossard missed.
When Gabriel Martinelli scored for Arsenal in the 30th minute, keeper Dmytro Riznyk scored an own goal, giving Arsenal the lead.
They could have won the game, though, with 15 minutes left because Valeriy Bondar tripped in the box.
Ref Benoit Bastien pointed to the spot after VAR checked.
Bukayo Saka takes most of Arsenal’s penalties, but the England winger was hurt and couldn’t play.
Havertz has been flagged for the Gunners before, and in his career, he has only missed one shot from 12 yards out.Sign up
On the other hand, Trossard was given the job for the first time in an Arsenal shirt.
He tried hard, but Riznyk’s legs saved him and helped him make up for his mistake.
One angry Gooner said, “Havertz has scored 20 of the 21 penalties he’s taken in his career.” What was Trossard doing with it?”
“You get a penalty and give it to Trossard, but your best penalty taker (Havertz) is on the field,” said someone else.
“We can really take risks and that’s not acceptable.”
“Havertz is way too nice too,” yelled one. Should have grabbed the ball from Trossard right away.”
“Why didn’t Havertz take the pen?” yelled someone else. He is the most likely player on the field to take the penalty for Arsenal. Terrible punishment from Trossard.”
Arsenal won the game with a 1-0 lead, which was good for Trossard, but Arteta said it wasn’t his call for the Belgian to take the spot.
He added: “I dunno the conversation as he [Havertz] is one of the takers, Leo decided to take it, okay he missed it unfortunately.”
