Social media users have taken a harsh view of Cristiano Ronaldo following his awful performance in Portugal’s Nations League draw against Scotland.
Portugal’s winning start to the new Nations League campaign came to an end at Hampden Park as they failed to take any chances. Ronaldo threw a fit on the field when the Tartan Army held tight and achieved a 0-0 draw. He believed the referee stopped the game too soon. Throughout the game, Ronaldo passed up several opportunities to score that he would often have. Scotland could have easily taken all three points in Glasgow if they had been more clinical. Nonetheless, the majority of supporters are content to accept a point and have made fun of Ronaldo on social media.
After the game, @FCBYamal17 expressed distaste for the football icon on X, formerly Twitter, writing, “Cristiano Ronaldo is holding Portugal back.”
@_tekkerzwit, a different spectator, concurred with the original message and added, saying: “Cristiano Ronaldo ought to disregard the 2026 World Cup. He’s accomplished enough in football.
@AzzurroWolf noted that Portugal might be able to play better football when their great player isn’t in the starting lineup. “I love the man,” he posted. He is, in my opinion, the best. However, consider how much more superior Portugal would be now if Cristiano Ronaldo weren’t around.”
“Cristiano Ronaldo may well be a great footballer, but by god, his antics on a football pitch get more embarrassing every single time I watch him,” tweeted @TonytheTim90 in response to the full-time whistle.
Ultimately, @Watson2711 stated: “Under Martinez, that Portugal team is not progressing at all. Despite the fact that Ronaldo is obviously past his prime and detrimental to the squad, he is afraid to bench him.”
Even though Ronaldo missed a lot of opportunities on Tuesday night, he wasn’t the only player wearing a Portugal shirt to perform poorly. Diogo Jota of Liverpool and Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United both had subpar performances, and Portugal could not take control of the match until Roberto Martinez made his substitutes in the second half.
Portugal will reflect and reorganize once their winning streak comes to an end in preparation for their next two games in November. In November, they play in the Nations League against Croatia away and Poland at home. After his return to Al-Nassr, Ronaldo plans to concentrate on winning the Saudi Pro League.
