When Lionel Messi joined MLS team Inter Miami last year, he shocked lots of people in the United States. It’s not often that a player as famous as him shows up on American TV or radio, but Wednesday night was one of those times.
After signing a ten-year streaming deal with Apple TV, the MLS can only be seen on Fox and FS1 for 34 regular season games. And only two of those 34 games this season were between Messi’s Inter Miami and other teams.
So, Fox was smart to pick the game between Inter Miami and the Columbus Crew on Wednesday before the season started, because it turned out to be a very important one for Messi’s team.
Inter Miami would win the MLS Supporters’ Shield with two games left in the regular season if they beat Columbus. And they did win in an exciting, high-scoring way that was full of stars.
In the 45th minute, Messi scored the first goal by sliding the ball past Patrick Schulte, the Columbus Crew manager. He didn’t stop there, though. After only five minutes, Messi scored on a free kick to make it 2-0 to Inter Miami before the break.
Just one minute into the second half, Columbus forward Diego Rossi scored to tie the game. And then, Luis Suárez, who plays for Inter Miami with Messi, made it 3-1.
Inter Miami would win the game 3-2, but it shows how depressing it is for fans that 94% of Messi’s MLS games are only shown on Apple TV.
Fox must be feeling pretty lucky that it picked such an important game for Messi’s team, though. On Sunday night, the network will show the last MLS regular season game, which is between the Portland Timbers and FC Dallas.
