Liverpool defeated Bologna in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday despite putting on a mixed display.
With four straight victories under their belt, the Reds were strong favourites to win five straight against the Italian team.Bologna had an erratic start to the season, so Liverpool knew they had a strong chance to build on their unbeaten run in the Champions League this year.
That’s precisely what they did in the end. However, there were some scary parts of the game. After the game, Arne Slot was not pleased, and it is understandable why.
Liverpool was occasionally far too exposed against a Bologna team that was up to the challenge.Furthermore, former Liverpool full-back Steve Nicol claimed that Darwin Nunez was the one member of Slot’s starting lineup who did not deserve to be there.
Steve Nicol issues the “lost” Darwin Nunez decision.
Nunez was ill over the week, so it was sad that he was unable to participate in Saturday’s victory over Wolves. It appeared as though he could miss the following game as well, having been left off of the matchday squad for the previous one.
However, Nunez was given the opportunity to start at the front of the line at Anfield after Diogo Jota took a knock during the game this past weekend.Regretfully, the Uruguayan failed to fully seize his chance.
Nunez was brought in for Jota just after the hour mark, following an ineffective and occasionally disheartening performance.READ MORE: During the Bologna victory, Liverpool supporters fly a brand-new Arne Slot banner at Anfield.Nicol never holds back when it comes to his punditry. The Liverpool veteran also said to ESPN that Nunez “looked lost” against Bologna after he failed to make an impression.
“Nunez got things going. To be honest, I think Mr. Nunez seems a little bewildered,” Nicol remarked. He was replaced, and Jota entered. However, generally speaking, every forward player needs to improve with the last ball.Sadly, Nunez is currently unable to move out of his own way. He attempted to shoot a few times while running offside, but he should have passed it.Darwin Nunez loses out on opportunityIt is important to note that Nunez might still be experiencing some discomfort from the illness that kept him out over the weekend. The 25-year-old may still be feeling under the weather because he did not appear to be quite his gregarious, all-action self against Bologna. That would explain Slot’s decision to substitute Jota for him rather early in the second half.Of course, there is still the possibility that Nunez was benched by the Liverpool head coach because he did not find Nunez very impressive. For the reason, Darwin’s future doesn’t appear bright. This was his moment to make a lasting impression in a major match. But Nunez lost his opportunity, as he sadly has far too frequently done in his Liverpool career.
