Tonight, Arda Güler, a teenage player for Real Madrid, sent Carlo Ancelotti a note.
His late appearance in Real Madrid’s match against LOSC Lille contributed almost as much.
Shortly after returning to action, Los Blancos travelled to the Stade Pierre-Mauroy to play in the Champions League.
After everything was said and done, Jonathan David’s lone goal proved to be the cause of the Spanish champions’ 1-0 defeat.
This was Real’s first loss in any competition for more than 250 days, dating all the way back to the previous campaign.
What then went wrong?
Los Merengues’ 90-minute performance tonight was far from their spectacular best; for the most part, the match lacked flair in the final third.
But when Arda Güler entered the picture, everything took a significant turn for the better.
Turkish international Güler, who was substituted on for the last twenty or so minutes in Lille, gave the visiting team some much-needed cunning and created several obvious chances to score goals before narrowly missing the net with a header of his own in injury time.
Throughout Wednesday’s action, Real Madrid was truly in dire need of the impact of a player of that calibre. Their 19-year-old midfield gem, once again, demonstrated to manager Carlo Ancelotti and his coaching staff that he is more than willing to step up when his teammates need him most.
