Football Insider has been informed by sources that Marc Guehi is “won over” by Liverpool manager Arne Slot following the player’s enthusiastic support by the staff responsible for recruitment.
Despite Slot’s reservations, the Reds showed a real interest in the 24-year-old centre back during the summer transfer window, although they never actively pursued a deal.
Slot intended for Virgil van Dijk to have competition and cover from a left-footed centre-back, with the hope that the prospective elite acquisition would eventually take the position of the Netherlands international.
This went against Liverpool’s hiring philosophy, which believes that Guehi fits the team perfectly as he shown his big-game mindset while representing England in the 2024 European Championship.
Now, the Liverpool boss is starting to have second thoughts on Guehi and is making it known that he believes the Palace defender has what it takes to become the all-time great iVan Dijk’s successor.
The England player was the only member of the national squad to miss a game during the summer tournament due to suspension.
When attempting to recruit Marc Guehi, Liverpool will have competition from Man United and Newcastle.
Although the Reds have long been supporters of Guehi, they are not the only Premier League team keeping an eye on his development.
Newcastle made a concerted effort to sign Guehi during the summer transfer window, but after three formal bids were turned down, they were unable to reach an agreement with Palace.
Football Insider also disclosed that Chelsea is interested in getting Guehi back to the team. It is thought that the Blues have a clause in their agreement that grants them matching rights in the event that the Eagles decide to sell Guehi.
The England international has participated in every minute of Palace’s Premier League play thus far, across all competitions. He has made 30 clearances and 4 interceptions.
Liverpool believes Guehi can replace Van Dijk, but the Premier League’s biggest teams are still working to persuade him to stay with the team after his current deal expires.
