A goal by John Stones in the eighth minute of extra time kept the 10 men from a famous win at the Etihad Stadium.

John Stones scored in extra time eight minutes into the second half to tie the game at 2-2 and break Arsenal’s hearts. Arsenal had played the whole second half with 10 players because Leandro Trossard was sent off right before halftime.

Manchester City got off to a great start when Erling Haaland ran clear and scored inside 10 minutes. But Riccardo Calafiori scored an amazing equaliser from far away in his first game for Arsenal.

Once the guests felt more sure of themselves, Gabriel Magalhaes rose above everyone else to head home Bukayo Saka’s corner just before halftime, giving them the lead. That wasn’t the end of the first half’s excitement, though. Leandro Trossard got a second yellow card for kicking the ball away after giving away a free kick.

David Raya (9/10):

Made some really sharp stops as the pressure increased in the second half. His handling was excellent and helped ease the pressure.

Jurrien Timber (8/10):

Seemed to enjoy playing on his natural side. Dealt well with the threat of the dangerous Doku. Battled so well and epitomised the Arsenal spirit.

William Saliba (8/10):

Showed some wonderful composure at times to bring the ball out of defence. Enjoyed his battle with Haaland. Never gave City anything in the second half.

Gabriel Magalhaes (8/10):

Another game, another thumping header from a corner. He will be disappointed with Haaland’s early goal, was caught too far away from Saliba. Produced a monstrous performance after the interval.

Riccardo Calafiori (8/10):

Got caught out by the clever Savinho for Haaland’s early goal and struggled against the winger at times in the first half, but got to grips with him as the game wore on. Scored a stunning equaliser though to mark his first Arsenal start. Limped off after the break.

Midfield

Thomas Partey (7/10):

Didn’t have to do as much running in the second half as Arsenal sat so deep. Protected the defence well.

Declan Rice (7/10):

Just sat on the edge of the box in the second half and added an extra layer of defence.

Kai Havertz (8/10):

Tireless performance as always. Worked so hard for the team after the sending off. Ran himself into the ground.

Attack

Bukayo Saka (6/10):

Brilliant set piece delivery again for Gabriel’s goal. Brought off at half-time following the red card.

Leandro Trossard (3/10):

Got himself sent off in such a stupid way. Yes, Arsenal can complain about Doku escaping a yellow for a similar incident, but Trossard should have been smarter.

Gabriel Martinelli (8/10):

Excellent performance, especially in the first half before the dismissal. Got the assist for Calafiori and answered some of his critics.

Ben White (7/10):

On at half-time so Arsenal could go three at the back after the red card. Fine display.

Jakub Kiwior (N/A):

Replaced Calafiori 15 minutes from time.

He will be so proud of his team after the week they have had. Switched to a back three after the red card and it looked like his players had got themselves a huge win until the last few moments.
