David Raya said that Arsenal’s goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana had a big impact on him after his amazing two saves against Atalanta won the Gunners a point.
After a dull first half, Mikel Arteta’s team was given an early disadvantage in the second half when Thomas Partey was penalized for a foul on Ederson by referee Clement Turpin.
There was a long VAR review, but replays mostly supported the French official’s ruling on the pitch. Raya took advantage of this by talking to the Gunners’ goalkeeping coach.
When the game started again, the Spanish goalkeeper smartly blocked Mateo Retegui’s shot and then miraculously jumped back up to grab the Italian striker’s rebound and keep it from going in.
Raya made his loan move to the north London club official this summer, and he said that his talk with Cana was a big part of what he did.
“After the game, I was lucky to go the right way and save it,” Raya told TNT Sports. It was a bad break that the rebound went straight to him, but I was able to get up and save it.
“Having kept a clean sheet is great because it helps the team get at least a point.”
During the break in play, he went to the bench and said, “I chose to go to the sideline because there was a long wait. I just spoke with the goalkeeping coach to get more information about where to go.”
“He helped me a lot in every way, so thanks to him too.” He does all the work on everything, so thanks to him too for the save.
Raya’s teammates praised his work right after the incident after the game was over, and then his manager Arteta said it was “probably one of the best saves I’ve seen in my career.”
Because of those two saves, the Gunners were able to tie with the Europa League winners and earn a point. Chelsea, led by Gian Piero Gasperini, was tough for Arsenal to beat, though they did miss a few clear-cut chances during the game.
“It wasn’t fun to watch because everyone turns into a man-to-man everywhere.” The player told TNT Sports. “We got off to a good start, played where we wanted to, and had a few good chances.”But after that, we lost a lot of balls easily and couldn’t get into a flow or gain speed, even though we didn’t give up any other goals.
When his team plays Manchester City next, Arteta will be hoping that they can keep up their great defense record. In their first five games, they kept four clean sheets.
The team goes to the Etihad on Sunday afternoon for a game that could decide the Premier League season.
