With his remarks following Liverpool’s victory over Manchester United, Mohamed Salah put the ball in Liverpool’s court. Since then, a Saudi Pro League accusation has surfaced about the Egyptian.
It took some time for Mohamed Salah to sign a new contract at Liverpool the last time. Finally, while the Egyptian was vacationing in Mykonos, an unexpected announcement was made.
After two years, Salah is in the last year of the contract he signed at the time, and he stated last weekend that Liverpool has not yet discussed a renewal with him. Given that he has just 116 days to negotiate a free transfer move to a club abroad before the summer of next year, it is concerning.
After scoring in Liverpool’s victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, Salah said on Sky Sports, “Going into the game, I said it could be the last time [I play here with Liverpool].” “No one at the club has spoken to me about contracts, so I’m just like, ‘OK, I’m playing my last season’ and see what happens at the end of the season.”
If he does depart for nothing, Liverpool made a strange decision. It would be prudent to hold the player down to an extension at the very least in order to guarantee that it can generate a transfer fee. A proposal of $197 million (£150 million/€178 million) was rejected out of hand for Salah just a year ago, so it would be a waste to miss out on even a lot less amount.
Salah is expected to accept a salary package from Saudi Pro League teams Al Hilal and Al Ahli totalling $100 million (£76 million/€90 million) spread over three years, according to Caught Offside. That comes to about $630k (£480k/€560k) a week, which is just about 25% more than what he is already receiving.
Money, however, is not expected to be the primary determining element in Salah’s future developments. The Egyptian player is believed to wish to stay at the top of the game above all else, given that he already receives a sizable salary from Liverpool and several rich endorsement deals.
No amount of money that the Saudi initiative might be able to throw at Salah will make that happen in the region; he has always flourished in the biggest games and on the largest stages. To see confirmation of this, he would simply have to examine the past experiences of his teammates Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Jordan Henderson.
When was the last time you watched a goal be scored in the Saudi Pro League? It has been more than a year since the league began to draw major stars, such as Neymar and N’Golo Kante.
Even with a few former Liverpool players, like Steven Gerrard, working in the Middle East region, it is difficult to recall a single memorable incident. Despite being one of the world’s most famous athletes, Neymar’s performance has received very little attention from media sources outside of Saudi Arabia.
Salah’s skill set should be shown off as much as possible, as seen by his most recent master class against Manchester United. He has scored 10 goals in his previous games at Old Trafford in that match, and you have undoubtedly seen his most recent effort many times since.
It is unlikely that anyone outside of Saudi Arabia would even notice if that was in Al Hilal or Al Ahli’s biggest game. There’s little reason to believe Salah would be interested in joining the Saudi league, therefore Liverpool needs to get a new deal immediately in order to make sure he doesn’t wind up at a Premier League or even a European team.
