He was mobbed as supporters tried to get pictures and autographs
He scored 126 goals in 366 matches during his 11 years with United.
And he famously pounced at the death to score the winner against Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final.
Solskjaer returned to United as manager in 2018 and, despite the club’s struggles on the pitch, he still remains a hero despite being sacked in 2021.
India is home to an astounding 38% of United’s global fan base, according to data from YouGov.
As a result, 50-year-old Solskjaer declared he was going to start a three-city tour of the nation.
And hundreds of people cheered him as he landed at the Mumbai airport on Saturday following his visit to Bengaluru.
Crowds flocked to see Solskjaer, the six-time Premier League champion, up close and take selfies, along with his well-known chant.
Local admirers of the video could not resist making jokes about the moments once it went viral.
One asked: “Did he get even 1% of such reception at his exit in Manchester?”
Another commented: “Well done lads..that’s how a hero should be welcomed!”
A third added: “This is sensational.”
Ahead of the trip, Solskjaer said: “I am truly thrilled to finally be here in India and meet the nation’s Red Devils.
“This tour organised by Tilak is not only a memorable moment for fans but also for me as I have been eager to visit the country and experience its footballing culture.
“I am deeply grateful for the warm welcome I have received in Bengaluru, and eagerly anticipate meeting fans in Delhi and Mumbai.”
