Birmingham City beat Wrexham 3-1 at St. Andrew’s on Monday night, giving Tom Brady the right to talk about his American teammate Rob McElhenney.
Both co-owners of their teams were at the League One game, which was attended by a lot of famous people. Former England captain David Beckham sat next to NFL great Tom Brady as Jay Stansfield scored two goals and debutant Tomoki Iwata scored a stunning goal to give the home team a comfortable win.
Before their teams played, McElhenney and Brady were seen talking on the pitch. It was the first competitive match between the two sides since both of them made investments.
And Brady got the last laugh because his Blues team played so well in what was called the “Hollywood Derby.”
McElhenney co-owns Wrexham with Ryan Reynolds, another famous actor. He flew straight from the Emmys to watch the Welsh team face their first test in League One since getting promoted last season.
Brady was also in a good mood even though Wrexham’s visiting fans were making sexual jokes at him. Fans yelled at the 47-year-old NFL star, who gave them the thumbs up.
Stansfield was Birmingham City’s hero after scoring two goals to tie them with Wrexham for first place in League One. The striker was the most expensive player in the league, costing £20 million, which broke the transfer record.
The home team tied the game at 2-2 on 22 minutes when the division’s record signing was the first to react and score from a loose ball in the box. On 52 minutes, his superb guided shot completed the comeback.
That came after Jack Marriott put Wrexham ahead with a deflected shot in just three minutes. On 59 minutes, Tomoki Iwata scored the second goal with a great strike from 25 yards out.
Krystian Bielik, the captain of Birmingham, was sent off in the 86th minute after getting two yellow cards in five minutes. The Blues hung on to move joint-top of the table.
Even though Wrexham lost their first game of the season, they are still in first place on goal difference. Birmingham is in second place, but they have a game in hand.
The game was the first league match between the two teams in 29 years. A pre-game lights show added to the already exciting atmosphere at St. Andrew’s as the division’s two title favorites went head-to-head. Beckham, Tom Wagner, and McElhenney were among the famous people who attended.
In the third minute, the Blues failed to clear their lines at a corner, and Marriott’s deflected shot found the net for Wrexham. This was a surprise early in the game, much to McElhenney’s delight.
From their own corner, Birmingham almost tied the game when Alex Cochrane played the ball along the ground into the box, where it was met by Alfie May. May then passed the ball to Paik Seung-ho, who hit it wide with a side-foot shot from 10 yards out.
In the 22nd minute, the home team tied the game when Stansfield scored from close range on his second league appearance for the club after Arthur Okonkwo blocked May’s powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area. Stansfield’s signing was the division’s record.
Soon after, Blues went forward again when Stansfield won back the ball just inside the Wrexham half. The ball finally got to May, but Okonkwo easily stopped his long shot.
As expected, the Blues had most of the ball but couldn’t create another clear-cut chance because Wrexham stayed deep and soaked up a lot of pressure. Marriott’s early goal was the only shot on goal for the away team in the first half.
But Stansfield turned things around in the 52nd minute when Cochrane sent in a perfectly placed cross from the left side, and the striker put a soft header into the bottom left corner.
Seven minutes later, Iwata scored his first goal for the club on his league start, sending a powerful shot into the bottom right corner from 25 yards out. This gave Blues a bigger lead.
