Mikel Arteta has signed a new three-year deal with Arsenal that keeps him with the team until 2027.
Since taking over from Unai Emery in December 2019, the Spaniard has turned the Gunners from a mere contender to the Premier League title to a real contender.
The current deal for Arteta was set to end at the end of the season. The new deal makes him one of the highest-paid managers in the Premier League and ends the doubt about his future.
In May, Mail Sport said that Arteta, who was making £9 million a year before, was going to become Arsenal’s highest-paid boss ever. The terms were said to be similar to Pep Guardiola’s £20 million-a-year salary at Man City.
The new deal also gives Arsenal a huge boost before this weekend’s North London derby match against Tottenham.
Arsenal’s official X account revealed the news with a picture of Arteta with Edu, the sporting director, and the words “Belief in what we do.” Mikel Arteta has promised to stay with The Arsenal.
Arteata said this after the news of his new deal came out: “I feel very proud and excited, and I can’t wait for what comes next.” Today I’m proud of where I am and how well I get along with everyone at the club.
“Every day I work with such nice people and people who are driven, I feel so lucky.” I want to do a lot more than what we’ve already done together because I feel challenged, cheered on, and motivated.
“We are all excited about the next few years, including the players and everyone else at the club. Our fans have changed the club and the team emotionally.”
“Our supporters have changed people, and we are different now because of them.” You can tell we’re not the same, and I think that’s because of them. We’re excited to keep going on this journey together.
Edu also said, “We’re thrilled that Mikel signed a new, long-term deal.” Everyone at the club is happy and proud of this, and it’s a big part of what we’re all working towards.
After a rough few years for the Gunners, Arteta took over as manager at the Emirates. He had worked as Pep Guardiola’s assistant coach at Man City for three years, from 2016 to 2019.
He made a big difference and won the FA Cup in 2019–20. Soon after, his title changed from head coach to manager, which showed how much power he was growing at the club.
Then Arteta managed a rebuild. He brought in and developed young players like Gabriel Martinelli, Emile Smith-Rowe, and Bukayo Saka, while moving big names and high-paid players like Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
After taking the Gunners to two eighth-place finishes in a row, they came in fifth place in 2021–22. In the last two seasons, they just missed out on the Premier League title to Man City.
Arteta’s last contract was signed in 2022. In 235 games as manager, the club has won 139 and the atmosphere around the Emirates has changed totally.
The Spanish manager has also made the Gunners a competitive team again. They won the Community Shield in 2020 and 2023, and before last season, they made sure they got back into the Champions League after being out for seven years.
Barcelona looked up to Arteta because of how well he played, but his new deal reinforces his dedication to Arsenal and extends his stay for another five years.
In March, Arteta won his 100th Premier League game as a manager, seven games faster than Arsene Wenger, who is known as Arsenal’s most famous previous manager.
The Spaniard played 150 times for the team in five seasons and was captain for two of those years.
So far this season, Arsenal has won two games and tied one. However, they will have a hard time at Tottenham on Sunday because Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, and Declan Rice are all out with injuries or suspensions.
