Lionel Messi and Oscar Ustari, a former partner from Argentina, are back together at Inter Miami, 16 years after winning an Olympic gold medal together.
It was a surprise, but the Herons have added another custodian. Tata Martino is trying to improve his choices in that area. Ustari has moved to Florida on a short-term deal that ends at the end of the 2024 Major League Soccer season.
The 38-year-old has played for Boca Juniors, Getafe, Sunderland, Newell’s Old Boys, and Pachuca, among other teams. He brings a lot of experience to Chase Stadium and will give established No. 1 and USMNT prospect Drake Callender more play to think about.
Ustari told Inter Miami’s website, “I’m excited to join a club like Inter Miami and thankful for the chance to be a part of this great institution that wants to do big things.” I’m also glad to see Leo again after a long time, both in the changing room and on the pitch. I’m always ready to help the team and share my knowledge wherever I’m needed to reach our goals as a group and for myself.
For the rest of the season, The Herons’ chief football officer and sports director, Chris Henderson, said, “We’re happy to add an experienced player like Oscar to our goalkeeping group.” His addition will be very important as the season comes to a close, since CJ dos Santos is still recovering from an illness and Cole Jensen is still growing as a player by playing for Inter Miami CF II in MLS NEXT Pro.
