Luis Suarez, the all-time leading goal scorer for Uruguay, announced his retirement from international football, and Darwin Nunez honoured him with a passionate homage.
Darwin shared a quotation graphic on Instagram that says, “I am so grateful for everything you did for me on the national team. Even though I didn’t know you, you were my idol, and I am even more so now that I do.”
When Uruguay plays Paraguay in Montevideo on Friday, former Liverpool forward Suarez announced on Tuesday that he will be playing for his country for the last time.
The 37-year-old star striker made his La Celeste debut in February 2007 and has 69 goals in 142 international games.
“Thank you from the heart for everything you did for me in the national team; you were my idol without knowing you and you are even more so now that I know you,” Nunez, a current Reds player, posted on social media. Nunez and Suarez have been teammates for five years.
“As you stated, you arrived as a child and left as a legend; you realised everyone’s dream.”
