Luis Suárez told the press on Monday, through tears, that this week will be his last game for Uruguay.

The star player, who has played for Liverpool and Barcelona, said he will quit international football after the test match against Paraguay on Friday.

Suarez, who is 37 years old, said he was just as excited to play as he was in his first game, which was in 2007.

“I leave knowing I gave everything for the national team until Friday,” he told me. I’m not upset.

“There is no better pride in oneself than knowing when the right moment to retire is and luckily I am confident that I am retiring from the national team because I want to take a step aside.”

He said he is glad he is leaving on his own terms and not because he is hurt. The striker has been with the Reds since 2011.

He said, “I’m 37 years old, and I know it will be hard to make it to the next World Cup.” Being able to quit makes me feel a lot better because I don’t have to wait for my injuries to stop calling me up or for this job to end.

It’s good to be ready to step back and want to do so. It’s tough because the choice wasn’t easy.

“But I go with the peace of mind that until the last game I gave my all, and that the flame did not burn out slowly and that is why I made the decision that it should be now.”

The best player in the 2011 Copa America was the star player from Uruguay. He has been to four World Cups.

This year, Marcelo Bielsa’s team came in third place in the Copa America. Suarez said he wants to finish the job on the pitch where his country plays.

He also said, “I wanted my kids to see me win a big game with the national team.” They scored a great last goal, but they didn’t win the prize.
