Real Sociedad and Arsenal have agreed on a £32.67 million deal for midfielder Mikel Merino.
The base price is £28.43m, and there are extra costs of £4.24m. The 28-year-old has signed to a four-year deal, with an extra year possible if he passes a medical.
In a two-team race for the Premier League title last season, Arsenal lost to defending winners Manchester City. This summer, they added ex-Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori to their team to make it stronger.
But Arsenal has been in advanced talks with Real Sociedad in La Liga to try to bring the Spaniard to the Emirates. They see the midfield as a key area to improve before the summer transfer deadline.
On the heels of Spain’s win at the European Championships in Germany this summer, Merino returned to Sociedad. In the final, Spain beat England 2-1.
The 28-year-old will likely play in the engine room with England midfielder Declan Rice. Thomas Partey is still a great choice for the squad after playing in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Wolves on the first weekend.
Kai Havertz sometimes played as the No. 8 for Arsenal last season, but he has recently been on fire, leading the line for the Gunners and becoming Arteta’s clear first-choice center forward.
Merino has played 242 times for Real Sociedad in the last six years. He has also earned 28 caps for Spain.
Last week, Mail Sport said that a £30m offer should be enough to sign the 28-year-old. Also, Edu, the sports director of Arsenal, was in Spain to speed up talks before the new Premier League season began.
Merino, who has one year left on his contract, was not in Real Sociedad’s squad for their La Liga opener against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil said that was “the best solution” because of the rumors about a transfer.
Today, the Merino deal is making movement. At the same time, Arsenal is almost done selling Eddie Nketiah to Nottingham Forest for £30 million.
The player came up through Arsenal’s academy and has scored 38 goals in 168 games for the club. On Monday, Mail Sport claimed that Arsenal turned down Forest’s first £25 million offer.
