Arsenal’s bid to sign Mikel Merino appears to be getting closer, after the midfielder was left out of Real Sociedad’s squad to face Rayo Vallecano.

Mikel Arteta has identified Mikel Merino as his top target to strengthen his midfield in the summer, but Arsenal are still struggling to reach an agreement with the Spanish side for the Euro 2024 winner.

However, sources in Spain say the two clubs have agreed a £30m deal for the 28-year-old, with the hope of completing the deal by Tuesday next week. And that deal has taken a step forward after the midfielder was left out of Real Sociedad’s squad for their game against Rayo Vallecano.

Coach Imanol Alguacil insists Merino is fit to play, but says he has decided to leave the midfielder out while talks with Arsenal continue. “Mikel Merino is not in the squad because I decided to do so,” he said.

He is ready to help the team. We will see next week if he will stay with us. There are ongoing negotiations.”

Arteta, meanwhile, was more tight-lipped when asked about the possibility of a deal for Merino, saying: “ You know I can’t talk about any other players from other clubs .” The arrival of Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna and the permanent purchase of David Raya are Arsenal’s only moves in the summer transfer window so far.
