PLAYER RATING: Man Utd 1(6) -1(7) Man City: Garnacho stirs up Citizens’ defense; Rashford proves he deserves not to be in England squad

In the Community Shield at Wembley, Manchester United was defeated by Manchester City on penalties. After a 1-1 draw between the two teams at the end of regulation time, a penalty shootout was required to decide the match. These are the game’s player ratings from us.

Andre Onana 6 – Didn’t have much to do in terms of saves.

Diogo Dalot 6 – Had an even battle with Doku before the winger was taken off. Gave a solid account of himself on the left when he switched to that flank.

Harry Maguire 6 – Coped well at the back. Produced some important interceptions that prevented City from getting in.

Jonny Evans 5 – Shaky first half and was a bit uncomfortable. Slightly better second period.

Lisandro Martinez 6 – Not very impactful at left-back as he usually is in central defence. Was let off the hook when McAtee hit the post. A decent return to the side nevertheless.

Casemiro 7 – Much better from the Brazilian. His passing was crisper and his actions on the ball were less rushed. Defended well and provided solidity in the middle of the park. Should endeavour to carry on in the same vein for the rest of the season.

Kobbie Mainoo 6 – Calm performance. Had some nice touches and looked after the ball well. Still has some work to do to gut fully up and firing.

Mason Mount 5 – Started very slowly but grew into the game as it progressed.

Amad Diallo 8 – United’s main source of threat during the time he was on the pitch. Was a constant pain in the backside of the City defenders as he constantly managed to find his way into the box. Should have scored when he tried to square the ball to Mount. His substitution was odd.

Marcus Rashford 5 – Should have found the back of the net with his chance in the first half in the 35th minute and also in the 75th minute when Garnacho set him up with just the goalkeeper to beat. Some solid contributions defensively.

Bruno Fernandes 7 – Scored a stunning goal but was unlucky to have been offside. Became more dangerous and impactful as the game opened up.

Substitutes

Scott McTominay 6 – Should have scored from Rashford’s header during a corner.

Facundo Pellistri 5 – Was outdone by Bernardo Silva for City’s equalising goal as he played in an unfamiliar right-back role.

Alejandro Garnacho 9 – Was a bright spark when he came on and was very positive in almost everything he did. Some nice combinations with Fernandes and produced a sensational cross that Rashford should have converted. Thoroughly deserved his goal.
