Even with everything Jordi Alba has done in his almost 20-year career, he keeps going to new heights.
The world-class back set a new Leagues Cup record by setting up four goals as Inter Miami CF held on to beat Toronto FC 4–3 at Chase Stadium on Thursday night. For the former Spanish international, the four assists were also the most in a single game.
And thanks to Alba’s help, the defending League Cup champions made it to the Round of 16. They now await the winner of Friday night’s game between Columbus Crew and Sporting Kansas City (7:30 pm ET | Apple TV – Free).
Inside the first 20 minutes, Alba set up goals for Matías Rojas, Diego Gómez, and Luis Suárez. Then, in the 59th minute, he helped Rojas seal the deal by setting up a long-range goal that gave Miami 10-man enough of a lead to beat Toronto.
Miami had to play with only nine players for almost 70 minutes (including extra time) after defender David Martínez was sent off in the first half.
“I got lucky at Barcelona and set up three goals in one game,” Alba said after the game. “And today, besides the four, I could have had two more, especially in the first half.”
“I like to attack, and I also like to offer help.” It’s something I’ve always done, and I’m glad to be doing it again this year. I’m glad to be in Miami with everyone and at the club. “Very pleased.”
Alba joined Inter Miami last summer after 12 years at FC Barcelona. He is thought to be the best left back of his age. He made his debut with Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and the Herons in the League Cup in 2023. It was the start of a new era for the team.
Alba has scored 4 goals and set up 7 others in 20 MLS games for the Leading Supporters’ Shield Team. He has helped set up 13 goals, which is tied for third most on Miami with Julian Gressel.
