Liverpool players were involved in another international final, which took place on a sweltering and humid Miami evening, between Luis Díaz of Colombia and Alexis Mac Allister of Argentina in the Copa America 2024 Final. There was a lot of background information available about this matchup: Colombia was playing their 22nd game without a loss and had just come from an exciting semifinal match against Uruguay; Argentina wanted to cap off their World Cup victory with a second regional championship, something last done by Spain when they won the 2008 and 2012 Euros with the 2010 World Cup in between.
The fight moved along similarly to a heavyweight match, with both sides trying to counter and find gaps. Colombia tried to play a more open style in an effort to push their offence against Argentina. Conversely, Argentina managed to withstand the strain. Even still, Colombia seemed more likely to score during the match; at one point, they had an 11–4 advantage over Argentina. However, Lautaro Martinez’s incredible finish with less than ten minutes left in the game allowed Argentina’s wide range of talents to take centre stage.
A variety of styles competed in the highly entertaining competition. In addition, Lionel Messi’s tank must be running low because the Argentina team is losing Di María, even if no formal statement has been made. Colombia has a respectable group of players who are beginning to reach their peak, even though Luis Díaz and the rest of the squad are not exactly youthful guns.
The fight proceeded much like a heavyweight fight, with both teams seeking to counter and work openings. Colombia attempted to force their offensive on Argentina by playing a more open game. Argentina, on the other hand, handled pressure well. Nonetheless, Colombia did appear more likely to score during the game; at one point, they outshot Argentina 11–4. But in the end, with less than ten minutes remaining in the game, Lautaro Martinez produced a superb finish that allowed Argentina’s array of stars to shine.
The contest was incredibly entertaining, with several styles taking the stage. Additionally, the Argentina team is losing Di María, and although no official statement has been made, Lionel Messi’s tank must be running low. Although Luis Díaz and the rest of the team are not exactly young guns, Colombia does have a respectable set of players who are starting to reach their peak.
Nevertheless, the outcome must unavoidably elevate this quad to the status of one of the greatest international teams in history, regardless of Argentina’s future circumstances. Achieving two Copas and a World Cup in a row is a real accomplishment. Alexis Mac Allister, on the other hand, receives a Copa in addition to his World Cup winning medal. Not at all a bad haul.
The Liverpool contingent’s overseas obligations end with this. For a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that it made reporting stories a little bit easier, I for one am sorry to see the summer football season go. In addition, I simply enjoy watching competitive football. Fortunately, there will not be too much longer since Liverpool’s opening preseason game is in less than two weeks.
Regardless of Argentina’s future circumstances, the result must inevitably make this quadruple one of the best international teams in history. Winning a World Cup and two Copas in a row is a significant achievement. In contrast, Alexis Mac Allister wins both a Copa and a medal for winning the World Cup. Not a bad haul at all.
This concludes the abroad commitments for the Liverpool contingent. I for one am sorry to see the summer football season go for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that it made covering stories a little bit easier. I also just like to watch competitive football. Thankfully, the wait won’t be too lengthy because Liverpool’s first preseason match is in less than two weeks.
