Cristiano Ronaldo made Pepe feel better after France beat Portugal in the Euro 2024 final.
There were a lot of close calls during the 120 minutes that France and Portugal played in the quarterfinals of the 2024 European Championships.
Portugal lost to France, even though custodian Diogo Costa made three amazing saves in a row to help his team get through the shootout in the previous round.
The French won the shootout 5-3 because Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix missed the third penalty. France’s Bradley Barcola and Theo Hernandez scored goals to make it 5-3.
And Pepe, a Portuguese defender, couldn’t hold back tears as team leader Cristiano Ronaldo tried to comfort him soon after the game was over.
Pepe, who is 41 years old and has played 143 times for his country, will almost certainly play in his last international game at Euro 2024.
The defender has played for Portugal for 17 years and has won two awards with his country. In 2016, his team beat France 1-0 in the Euros.
Pepe started all but one of Portugal’s Euro 2024 games, which was the most by an older player in a European Championships game.
Ronaldo, who is captain, revealed the news after Monday’s win over Slovenia. Euro 2024 will also be his last international tournament.
However, Ronaldo also showed how he felt during that game by crying after missing a penalty in the first round of extra time that would have almost certainly put Portugal in the quarterfinals.
Even though Ronaldo missed a penalty, Portugal won the later shootout and moved on to the next round.
Ronaldo made the first penalty kick in the shootout against France, just like he did in the game against Slovakia. However, it wasn’t enough to get them to the semi-finals.
The semi-finals will now be between France and Spain. The game will take place at 8pm BST in the Allianz Arena in Munich.
