Arda Guler, a 19-year-old midfielder, scored and set up a goal at the Euros, making him the third youth in history to do so, after Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney.
The first game of Group F was a 3-1 win over Georgia. Guler scored a beautiful goal with a cut from the right wing into the middle and a left-footed shot into the far corner. That made him younger than Ronaldo and the youngest player to score on his Euro start.
Another great play by Guler came yesterday in the round of 16 against Austria. He took a corner kick that defender Merih Demiral headed into the goal, making the score 2-0. With that goal, Guler became the third youth to score and set up a goal in a Euro, following Ronaldo and Rooney in 2004.
Ronaldo got two goals and set up two others at Euro 2004, when he was 19 years old. He helped Portugal get to the final. He scored in the first game against Greece, had an assist in the game against Russia, and then scored and set up another goal in the 2-1 win over the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
At Euro 2004, Rooney scored four goals and set up one. The scorer who used to play for England scored twice against Switzerland, helped England beat Croatia with two goals and an assist, but Portugal beat them in the quarterfinals.
With four goals, Rooney was tied for second place in the Euro 2004 Golden Boot list with Ruud van Nistelrooy of the Netherlands. He was only five goals behind Milan Baros, a former scorer for the Czech Republic.
Turkey beat Austria 2-1 in the round of 16 of the Euro 2024 tournament at the Red Bull Arenal in Leipzig on July 2. Arda Guler was tackled during the game.
Coach Vincenzo Montella surprised everyone by switching from a 4-2-3-1 setup to a 3-4-3 for yesterday’s round of 16. As captain Hakan Calhanoglu was out, Guler played as a false 9 alongside Kenan Yildiz and Baris Alper Yilmaz, who were both wingers.
Turkey took advantage of their set-piece chances. Merih Demiral scored twice from Guler’s two corners, becoming the first defender to do so in a big knockout game since Lilian Thuram in the 1998 World Cup. For the rest of the game, Austria pressed hard, but only Michael Gregoritsch was able to score a goal.
Türkiye made it to the quarterfinals of the Euros for the third time, after 2000 and 2008. They beat Ukraine 2-1. Vincenzo Montella’s team is also the biggest surprise of the event. They are the only team not in the FIFA Top 20 to make it to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024.
