EMOTIONAL MESSAGE: Cristiano Ronaldo Shares Nine-Word Note to Fans After Tearful Penalty Drama in Last-16 Clash with Slovenia, Looks Ahead to Quarter-Final Showdown Against France

Cristiano Ronaldo wrote a seven-word update on social media after a thrilling night at Euro 2024 in which Portugal defeated Slovenia in a penalty shootout and barely advanced to the quarterfinals.

The 39-year-old made multiple attempts to break the deadlock, but he is still without a goal to his name at the European Championship.

Ronaldo was left in tears when his penalty in extra time was saved after Slovenian custodian Jan Oblak had denied him multiple opportunities.

The Portugal captain watched as the Atletico Madrid custodian agonisingly saved his penalty, wasting a fantastic opportunity to take the lead in the last-16 match.

Immediately after, there was a heartfelt incident in which Portuguese players, including Man United full-back Diogo Dalot, tried to console Ronaldo.

Ronaldo did not score from the spot in the shootout after missing a penalty in extra time.

After another fifteen minutes in which there was no goal, penalties were used to determine the match, giving Ronaldo an opportunity to atone for his earlier mistake.

He made no mistake on his second visit to the penalty spot and lashed his effort into the bottom corner past a stretching Oblak who failed to make a save in the shootout.

Ronaldo then seemed to apologise to the Portuguese supporters who had congregated inside the Frankfurt Arena after a subdued celebration.

But most of the credit would go to Portugal’s custodian Diogo Costa, who saved three straight penalties from Slovenia to help his country prevail and salvage a tournament victory.

Following the game, Ronaldo posted a brief social media update in his native tongue, which said, “Inexplicable moments.” Let’s put our all into it! I’m grateful.

The renowned player also posted a number of photos.

He will now start getting ready for a quarterfinal matchup with France, which will be a rematch of the 2016 championship.

Supporters flocked around the former Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Juventus player, with one commenting, “You are the greatest!!!” Even though everyone makes mistakes, we will always remember what you did for the Portuguese people as a whole. Get moving and travel to France.
