Liverpool sources have disclosed the club’s position regarding a potential transfer involving Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, who is currently competing at Euro 2024.
Williams has exceeded expectations as Spain’s starter on the left flank during the Euros, as evidenced by his match-winning performance against Italy.
This has resulted in a surge in curiosity regarding his contractual status at Athletic Club, particularly in light of the revelation that his contract contains a £47 million release clause.
According to Pol Ballus, a Spanish reporter for The Athletic, Liverpool had considered the 21-year-old as a potential target if it was determined that Arne Slot needed a replacement winger.
Nevertheless, James Pearce, his colleague, has recently received information from sources within the club that Williams is not included in the agenda.
Liverpool is “interested in adding a wide attacker to increase their options in that department,” explained Pearce. However, the Spaniard is “not under consideration.”
Chelsea has “all but ruled themselves out,” while Arsenal and Barcelona are attributed with an interest in Williams. However, a move is unlikely.
This is due to the cost of the agreement, as Williams’ £49 million release clause “would need to be paid in one go,” as well as the player’s own insistence that he is committed to Athletic Club.
“I have recently renewed my contract with Athletic Club.” Last week, when discussing the situation with Spanish programme La 1, he stated, “I am extremely satisfied with Athletic.”
“I have recently renewed my membership, so it is quite peculiar that they continue to inquire about these matters.”
It is perhaps unsurprising that Liverpool would not pursue him, despite the fact that those reasons will almost undoubtedly have influenced their own stance on a move.
While Williams is a versatile wide player, it appears that the club is currently in quest of a left-footed right winger to provide support to Mohamed Salah.
Although the Athletic Club prodigy is at ease on the right, he is a natural right-footer who is inclined to drive towards the byline rather than cut inside.

The actual intentions of Liverpool may be more elucidated by their connections to individuals such as Johan Bakayoko of PSV Eindhoven and Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford.
However, it is important to note that not all connections to a left-footed right winger should be regarded as genuine, as Liverpool sources have already rejected connections to Yankuba Minteh.
