Jamie Carragher SLAMS Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice for being ‘far too deep when Denmark have the ball’ as England struggle in their Euro 2024 clash against Denmark

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice have come under fire from Jamie Carragher for their performances in the first half of England’s Euro 2024 match against Denmark.

Rice and Alexander-Arnold were once more used in midfield, but Carragher said he thought the two were ‘far too deep’ when Denmark had the ball.

Carragher called on John Stones and Marc Guehi, the centre backs for England, to instruct Alexander-Arnold and Rice to advance.

Carragher, a former England international, said that Rice and Alexander-Arnold were “too concerned with what’s behind them.”

“Trent & Rice are far too deep when Denmark has the ball; they are too concerned with what’s behind them,” Carragher commented on X. They must put down the object in front of them. To allow them to push out, centre backs must be yelling at them to get out.

Given that Alexander-Arnold typically plays right-back for Liverpool, there had been significant discussion before the tournament regarding the choice to use him in midfield.

Although he has other choices, like Conor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo, and Adam Wharton, England manager Gareth Southgate decided to start Alexander-Arnold in midfield for the first two group games.

Whether Alexander-Arnold can stay in the starting lineup for the duration of England’s championship campaign will be interesting to see.

Having played for his country more than 50 times, Rice has the most international caps of any player in the England roster.

While Alexander-Arnold has had to wait longer for opportunities, he has grown into a vital member of Southgate’s team.
