NEW MISSION: Van Dijk takes on a new role for Liverpool as the city’s tourism ambassador.

Virgil van Dijk now works for travel company Expedia, which means he represents Liverpool both on and off the pitch. The Reds captain has taken on this new job because the city is getting so many tourists.

Liverpool is getting a lot of tourists, and Virgil van Dijk knows why.

Merseyside has had so many more tourists than usual that Expedia called Liverpool one of the ten most popular places in the world in their Unpack 2024 guide. Searches for trips to Liverpool have grown by 100% year over year as more people from the US, Canada, Australia, Norway, and Ireland come to visit.

Because Liverpool is becoming more and more famous, Expedia has made Van Dijk, the captain of the Reds, their new ambassador. The Dutch defender has written the ultimate tour guide to the city. It includes his favourite spots, such as Anfield, where he has lived for six years, the famous Royal Albert Dock, and the famous Cavern Club, which helped launch The Beatles’ career.

Van Dijk said, “I love to travel very much.”

Football takes us to a lot of places, but we don’t get to fully experience them. That’s why whenever I have some free time, I like to plan an adventure with my family and friends. Being able to work with Expedia makes me happy because we both think that “we were made to travel.”

“Of course, football schedules are very full, but one day I’d love to visit Japan—I’m really interested in that country.” I love city breaks too. “I love showing my family new cities and ways of life,” he said.

“I love a lot of cities, like Amsterdam and Paris, but Liverpool is very special to me. That’s why I’ve been so excited to work with Expedia to put together my Liverpool travel guide.” I hope it helps people who come to this great city in the future!”
