Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool is reportedly ready to become the most paid defender in the world if he signs with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr this summer.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Bayern Munich and now Al-Nassr of the Saudi Pro League are showing interest in the Dutch international, who has one year remaining on his Liverpool deal. Also, according to Spanish newspaper Marca, officials of the Riyadh-based squad met with Van Dijk’s group and put him a contract that would make him the “highest-paid defender in the world.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The 32-year-old has stated that he is intent on playing for Liverpool next season under new manager Arne Slot, despite these new offers.
He stated last month that he still had one year remaining on his contract. As the club captain, I have shown my support for the new coach and my enthusiasm for the next season.
There will undoubtedly be many adjustments, but I have no doubt that we will succeed greatly.”

The former Celtic star has played in 270 games for the Reds since joining from Southampton in the 2017–18 campaign. During that time, he has won several titles, including the FIFA Club World Cup, the FA Cup, the Champions League, and the Carabao Cup.
WHAT NEXT?
Though Van Dijk’s primary goal right now is representing the Netherlands in the Euros in Germany this summer, there will always be uncertainty regarding his long-term future. The rumours about what will happen to him next year will not stop until he signs a new contract at Anfield or somewhere else.
