David Beckham was one of the famous people from Manchester United’s past who walked the red carpet for a new documentary about one of the team’s biggest moments.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s team won the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League in the 1998–99 season, which was the first time an English team had ever done that.
Ever since, foes Manchester City have also done the incredible thing, most recently last season. But there is no denying that it is an amazing achievement in the history of football.
So, Amazon Prime just released a documentary series about that amazing season. It includes exclusive talks with Sir Alex Ferguson, David Beckham, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Peter Schmeichel, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and others as they look back on that amazing season 25 years later.
Beckham led the way at the event on Thursday night, and on the red carpet, he posed for shots with Neville, a longtime friend and teammate.
On the red carpet in Manchester, people like Schmeichel, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Teddy Sheringham, Nicky Butt, Jesper Blomqvist, and Ronny Johnsen joined the pair.
Neville stood for pictures with his wife Emma Hadfield, and Sheringham was seen with Kristina Andrioti.
Along with the famous Man United players, Wrexham director Humphrey Ker was also seen on the red carpet. His team had just been promoted to League One, when he was there.
“99” is made by the same company that made the Netflix show “Beckham.” It will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on May 17 and have three parts.
The video, which came out in April, starts with the most exciting parts of the Champions League final in Barcelona, where goals by Sheringham and Solskjaer in the last few seconds saved victory.
Schmeichel, the goalie, says, “Only this will define you forever.” Beckham then says, “1999—it had been a hell of a season,” referring to how badly he was treated after getting sent off for England at the 1998 World Cup.
Then, Gary and Phil Neville, along with Ferguson’s assistant coach Steve McClaren, are seen talking about how “desperation,” “heartache,” “pain,” and “sheer fear” United’s tightrope act in three games makes them feel.
“There was no time to rest,” says Ferguson, who was made a knight after United’s success.
Then Yorke and Sheringham seem to talk about how much they hate Arsenal, coached by Arsene Wenger. United beat Arsenal in an epic FA Cup semi-final and won the title by a single point.
There are hints of Ryan Giggs’ famous solo goal that beat Arsenal in the semi-final repeat and the days when things looked hopeless before the amazing comeback against Bayern Munich.
This is what Amazon says about the show: “The documentary follows the amazing journey to greatness with untold stories from inside the team, revealing the locker room fights, personal struggles, and miraculous moments behind the legendary season, which culminated in the most unbelievable comeback victory in football.”
“The show is both a tribute to one of the greatest achievements in football history and the story of a group of players that Sir Alex Ferguson brought together, trained, and shaped to make history.”
“The documentary also includes archive footage that has never been seen before and honest video from the club and fans that shows what goes on behind the scenes.”
