Mason Greenwood, a Manchester United loanee, performed admirably despite Getafe’s catastrophic 2-0 loss to Athletic Club on Friday night.
Athletic Club only needed a goal from Inaki Williams in either half to secure all three points and eliminate Greenwood and his teammates.
Oscar Rodriguez, Ilaix Moriba, and the Carrington academy all began the game on the right side of a 4-2-3-1 formation, playing directly behind striker Jaime Mata.
Even in trying circumstances, Greenwood excelled, proving why some of the top teams in Europe are after him and keen to provide him with a permanent home.
Greenwood had 98 touches of the ball in the ninety minutes he was on the field.
With an amazing completion percentage of 88%, the Englishman completed 59 of the 67 passes that he tried. He completed six crucial passes.
On three of his seven crossing attempts, he found his desired target.
Four of the five long balls that the 22-year-old attempted to ping were connected with accuracy; it was an incredible demonstration of his unique technical abilities.
Greenwood scored two significant points.
He attempted six attempts in the entire game, three of which were off-target, and as many of which required Athletic Club goalkeeper Unai Simon to react quickly to seal his goal. He blew two excellent opportunities.
In addition, Greenwood stopped three shots.
The attacker started six dribbles. He finished four of them. He once struck the woodwork and, regrettably, missed a penalty.
Had Greenwood scored from the penalty kick, it would have been his ninth league goal of the year.
In four of the seven ground duels he engaged in, the player prevailed. He cleared one thing as well.
Estadio Coliseum’s supporters would have surely wondered how Greenwood missed the scoreboard, but all in all, his performance was incredibly encouraging, and he can build on it to end the season strongly.
He undoubtedly demonstrated why he is a candidate for the La Liga Team of the Season.
